UNICRI has launched a new research aimed at providing data on the consequences of the economic crisis on women’s rights and gender inequality. It focuses on domestic violence, discrimination, access to justice and welfare service and explores possible strategies to address the risks. Case studies are collected from the grassroots level from France, Spain, Italy and Greece, where the impact of the economic downturn on the women and the coping responses of their respective governments are studied from a gender perspective. The research intends to address the gap in the research about gendered impact of the economic crisis at national and regional levels and to contribute to the post-2015 development framework.
ESCWA’s Centre for Women (ECW) developed a comprehensive Database on National Legislations on VAW in the Arab Region drawing on close consultations with fourteen Member States. The Database is accessible to all Member States through ESCWA’s web portal, to be used and updated as a monitoring and reporting tool on any legislative developments relevant to VAW in the region. ESCWA’s Centre for Women (ECW) developed a comprehensive Database on National Legislations on VAW in the Arab Region drawing on close consultations with fourteen Member States. The Database is accessible to all Member States through ESCWA’s web portal, to be used and updated as a monitoring and reporting tool on any legislative developments relevant to VAW in the region. Participating countries received training on the usage of the Database supported with an analytical regional report that summarizes the findings of all collected data and proposes a framework for action oriented measures.

Under the UNAIDS Action for Results: Outcomes Framework 2009-2011, UNFPA, UNDP, UN WOMEN, WHO, UNICEF, UNHCR, in collaboration with the Men Engage Alliance (Sonke Gender Justice and the Athena Network), as well as the Interagency Working Group on Women, Girls, Gender Equality and HIV – supported select pilot countries in addressing the linkages between GBV and HIV and AIDS in national strategic plans; building effective partnerships at the national level in order to integrate a comprehensive response to violence against women and girls into national AIDS strategies and plans; and strengthening the engagement of men and boys for promoting gender equality. A West Africa regional meeting was held in Senegal in September 2013 to develop capacities of stakeholders to address the above.

WHO, in partnership with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Medical Research Council in South Africa, launched the first ever global and regional estimates of the prevalence and the health burden of intimate partner violence and non-partner sexual violence against women. The report was widely covered by the media and underscored the need for addressing violence against women as a women’s health and public health problem, as well as a human rights and development concern. WHO is also conducting a randomized controlled trial of a counseling-empowerment intervention in antenatal care in South Africa.

The Office provided specialized training, including on indicators to identify trafficking in women, to more than 800 criminal justice practitioners worldwide.

In the area of pre-natal sex selection, UNFPA supported the International Center for Research on Women to produce the research study on “Masculinity, Son Preference and Intimate Partner Violence in India” as well as the Research Institute for Development to produce a study entitled “Sex Imbalances at Birth in Armenia: Demographic Evidence and Analysis “on sex-at-birth (SRB) imbalances in Armenia.
