ECLAC provided technical assistance to the Ministry of Woman of Paraguay on the elaboration of their National Action Plan for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security, which was the second one in the region to be published. A pilot course for the regional training curriculum on the implementation of UNSCR 1325 was carried out highlighting the need to involve women in conflict resolution processes and peacekeeping. Hide

UNAIDS and Department of Peace Keeping Operations are developing a toolkit related to “Shining the light on ending violence against women” in (post-) conflict settings. Hide

Under the UNAIDS Action for Results: Outcomes Framework 2009-2011, UNFPA, UNDP, UN WOMEN, WHO, UNICEF, UNHCR, in collaboration with the Men Engage Alliance (Sonke Gender Justice and the Athena Network), as well as the Interagency Working Group on Women, Girls, Gender Equality and HIV – supported select pilot countries in addressing the linkages between GBV and HIV and AIDS in national strategic plans; building effective partnerships at the national level in order to integrate a comprehensive response to violence against women and girls into national AIDS strategies and plans; and strengthening the engagement of men and boys for promoting gender equality. A West Africa regional meeting was held in Senegal in September 2013 to develop capacities of stakeholders to address the above. Hide

UNAIDS Gender Assessment Tool for National HIV Responses, including gender-based violence was developed and implemented in 20 countries in 2013. ECLAC has continued its work on awareness-raising by providing training as requested by Member States: Hide

UNAIDS supported nine civil society consultations,6 led by the Women Won’t Wait campaign, focusing on HIV and partner violence, and advocating for increased investment in HIV, gender equality and women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights through the Post-2015 development framework. To highlight the gross human rights violation of violence against women, UNAIDS collaborated with the Permanent Mission of Namibia and Victims2Survivors, to launch the Namibian ‘Unite to end Gender-based Violence’ exhibition on 10 December 2013, in Geneva. In celebration of the International Day of Peace, UNREC, the regional centre of UNODA for Africa, participated in training sessions for young women in Togo on “Citizenship education of young women, guaranteeing a fairer society”, which also addressed the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and the need for increased representation of women at all levels of decision-making, especially in the prevention, management, and peaceful settlement of conflicts. The UN Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) conducted a training course for female judicial and law enforcement officials in El Salvador on Combating the Illicit Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition and Explosives aimed also at addressing the rise in femicides, which are further exacerbated by illicit arms trafficking. UNREC, the regional centre of UNODA for Africa, co-organised with OHCHR, a training of police and other law enforcement agencies on the use of force during elections in Madagascar, also addressing GBV and the need for gender sensitive responses.
